Aldersgate

ALDERSGATE (from a print of 1670).

Aldersgate was a gate in the ancient London Wall that surrounded the city. No-one knows for sure, but its name comes from either it's builder a Saxon named Aldrich, or from the alder trees that used to grow around it. It was pulled down 1618 and rebuilt due to it becoming dilapidated, then damaged in the Great Fire (1666), but repaired. The gate was finally sold in 1761, and taken down immediately afterwards.
